Tensar's Engineering Scholarship Competition

Our first Engineering Scholarship Competition is now complete. Thanks to all who took the time to learn about Tensar technology and enter the competition, and congratulations to the winners of the two $1,000 scholarships (see below).

In our first Engineering Scholarship Competition, we offered two $1,000 scholarships to U.S. engineering students based on a pair of design challenges – one in flexible pavement design and one in Mechanically Stabilized Earth wall design. We received many strong entries from engineering students across the United States. Our panel reviewed and scored all entries based on the judging criteria, and the results were very close. We’re pleased to announce the winners:

The winner of the flexible pavement design challenge is Joseph Renze. Joseph is a senior studying Civil Engineering at the University of North Dakota. He spent ten years as a trucker before returning to school to pursue an engineering career. He lives in Maplewood, MN with his wife and two children.

The winner of the MSE wall design challenge is Greg Boccafola. Greg is a senior at Villanova University, majoring in Civil Engineering and minoring in Engineering Entrepreneurship. He has worked in structural and environmental engineering and conducted research in geotechnical engineering.

Congratulations to Joseph and Greg, and thanks to all who entered the competition.


 

Over the past 40 years, Tensar has invented many products and systems which have improved the way we build pavements and other site improvements like retaining walls. Most of our systems are based on a product called geogrid, which was invented by Tensar’s founder, Dr. Brian Mercer.

We make several types of geogrid, which can be used to stabilize granular materials and reinforce soil to improve their engineering properties.

We also offer design software for these applications, which is widely used in the industry. You can download our software for free using these links on this page.
