When a pavement fails to reach its expected design life, how often is this the result of problems with the hot mix asphalt? Tensar's Bryan Gee, P.E. found the answer was, “not very often.” The quality of hot mix asphalt has greatly improved, however, many roads are still in poor condition. If it’s not the asphalt’s fault, then what happened? Bryan discusses six of the most common causes on the Tensar Blog.
Having a better understanding of these causes and how to circumvent them can help us improve road performance and reduce life cycle costs. Here, you can watch our 30 minute webinar to learn how you can control many of those causes. This course may serve as a 1/2 Professional Development Hour.

Pavement engineers are often charged with delivering a high-performing design on a small construction budget. With client expectations increasing and roadway maintenance budgets steadily declining, “miracle worker” has become a major part of the job description. It’s obvious that conventional design methods are no longer cutting it. However, forward-thinking engineers are gaining traction with a pavement optimization strategy that delivers the best performing roads for the lowest cost.
So, what is pavement optimization? It’s an innovative concept in pavement design that gives the designer the ability to adjust the design to meet requirements as efficiently as possible. Here are some examples:
1) Optimize for initial cost: Significantly reduce the pavement thickness --> Get the original design life but save on initial costs
2) Optimize for (cost neutral) pavement performance: Slightly reduce the pavement thickness --> Get significantly longer performance compared to the original design life and pay the same initial cost
3) Optimize for life cycle cost: Use the same pavement thickness --> Pay more up front on the construction but greatly reduce life cycle cost.
SpectraPave Software is our powerful and proven, cloud-based design program specializing in the optimization of paved roadways as well as the stabilization of unpaved roadways and construction platforms. Users can conveniently create, save, and access designs across multiple devices.
A geogrid is a geosynthetic material used to stabilize soil. Today, more pavement designers are choosing to implement geogrids to improve the performance of the aggregate within pavement structures to combat increasing material costs, withstand increasing traffic loads and inadequate pavement structures created with traditional pavement sections.
How do geogrids work? Geogrids have openings, called apertures, which allow aggregate to strike through and provide confinement and interlock. Geogrids can improve the long-term performance of paved and unpaved roadways by minimizing aggregate movement and maintaining modulus values.

Your reputation is at stake anytime your stamp is used on a design. At Tensar, we don’t take this lightly. That’s why we have invested extensively in research and testing of our TriAx Geogrid, proving its design and performance parameters time and again. You can use your stamp with confidence every time TriAx Geogrid is specified in a design. Don’t risk using products with unproven technologies.
Tensar has invested extensively in research and testing of our TriAx Geogrid, proving its design and performance parameters time and again. If your TriAx spec is challenged by another geosynthetic product, make sure you have an accurate comparison of performance. Our "Specifier Checklist" will allow you to thoroughly review the design parameters and help you protect your TriAx spec.
TriAx Geogrid has helped pavement engineers around the world optimize their designs to get the longest service life for their budget. Due to its ability to efficiently confine aggregate, TriAx reduces the required aggregate and pavement thickness while improving the overall performance. Here are just a few examples of how TriAx Geogrid saves money and extends pavement life.
